The Zwickau Factory Had a Mission
2020. Volkswagen transforms its legendary Zwickau plant - where Golfs, Passats, and Trabants were built for 116 years - into Europe's first factory dedicated exclusively to electric vehicles. The mission? Produce 500,000 battery packs per year for the entire VAG Group.
The problem? Toyota had spent 25 years perfecting hybrids. Tesla had 15 years of EV development. VW had just 3 years to build the MEB (Modular Electric Drive Matrix) platform from scratch and convince millions of customers that an "electric Golf" made sense.
The result: the ID.3 and ID.4 became the second and third best-selling EVs in Europe (after Tesla). But did VW win on charging technology?
Not exactly. The ID.4 charges roughly twice as slowly as a Tesla (135 kW vs 250 kW). But VW did something Tesla could not: it sold an electric car that costs €12,000-€22,000 less and still drives exactly like a Volkswagen.

What testers say about the charging curve:
Spider's Web tested the ID.4 in 2021 and noted it was among the fastest AC charging experiences they had encountered at the time (10). Elektrowoz.pl found in testing the ID.5 Pro (which shares the same battery as the ID.4) that actual usable capacity measured 71.8 kWh rather than the rated 77 kWh, though the real-world range matched expectations (11).
Real-world winter test (Car Maniac):
- ID.4 at 160 km/h: consumption 36-43 kWh/100 km
- Real-world range at maximum motorway speed in winter: 170-200 km (12)
Comparison: ID.4 vs the Competition
VW ID.4 Pro vs mid-size electric SUVs:
| Model | Battery | DC power | Time 10-80% | Price (approx. 2025) |
| VW ID.4 Pure | 52 kWh | 50-100 kW | ~30 min | ~€34,000 |
| VW ID.4 Pro | 77 kWh | 125-135 kW | ~35 min | ~€45,000 |

| Ford Mustang Mach-E | 76 kWh | 150 kW | ~38 min | ~€60,000 |
| Skoda Enyaq iV 80 | 77 kWh | 125 kW | ~35 min | ~€61,000 |
| Audi Q4 e-tron | 77 kWh | 125 kW | ~35 min | ~€65,000 |
Key takeaways:
- ID.4 Pure: the most affordable electric SUV in the C-segment in many European markets (especially with national EV incentives)
- ID.4 Pro: ~€12,000 cheaper than the Tesla Model Y, but roughly twice as slow on DC charging
- MEB platform: the Skoda Enyaq and Audi Q4 share identical technical specs but cost €16,000-€20,000 more
- Ford Mach-E: similar price to the Tesla, similarly slow DC charging to the VW
Is the Tesla worth the extra €12,000 for faster charging? It depends: if you mainly drive locally and charge at home, probably not. If you regularly do 500+ km trips, then quite possibly yes.
Who Is the VW ID.4 For?
Scenario 1: House with a Garage, 50 km Daily Commute
Profile:
- House with garage, portable charger Q11 11 kW
- Commute: 50 km per day (25 km each way)
- Weekend trips up to 200 km
How it works:
- Charges the ID.4 Pure (52 kWh) every night in ~4.7 hours at 11 kW
- Energy consumption: ~17 kWh/100 km × 50 km = 8.5 kWh per day
- Annual running costs are substantially lower than an equivalent petrol or diesel SUV (7 l/100 km)
With EV purchase incentives available in many European countries, the ID.4 Pure becomes one of the most price-competitive electric SUVs in the C-segment - cheaper than most combustion-engine SUVs of similar size.
Scenario 2: Company Car, 120 km Daily, Workplace Charger Available
Profile:
- Flat without home charger
- Employer has 11 kW AC chargers in the car park
- Daily driving: 120 km
How it works:
- ID.4 Pro (77 kWh, real-world range ~400 km)
- Charges at work 2-3 times a week (often free for employees)
- This is the ideal use case for the ID.4: company vehicles with AC charging access
- Slow DC charging? Irrelevant - you never need it
Scenario 3: Long-Distance Trip 350 km - Can It Be Done Comfortably?
Profile:
- ID.4 Pro (531 km WLTP range, ~400 km real-world on the motorway)
- Trip: 350 km in one direction
How it works:
- Depart: battery 100% = ~400 km range
- Arrive at destination: ~50 km remaining (enough to reach the hotel)
- Charge at hotel on AC 11 kW overnight: full battery by morning
- Return: 100% → arrives home with ~50% remaining
Alternatively:
- Stop at a DC station (Ionity, Shell Recharge) roughly halfway
- Charge 10-80% in 35 minutes - time for a meal break
- Continue with no range anxiety
Conclusion: the ID.4 Pro handles trips up to 400 km without difficulty. Longer trips require a DC stop - and this is where the slower charging speed (135 kW vs Tesla's 250 kW) starts to make a noticeable difference.
Bidirectional Charging V2G - With Limitations
The VW ID.4 with the 77 kWh battery (82 kWh gross) received Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) bidirectional charging in the ID. Software 3.x update (13, 7).
What does this mean?
- The car can feed energy from its battery back into the electricity grid
- You need a special bidirectional DC BiDi wallbox
- Operating range: 80% → 20% (approximately 43-44 kWh available)
Limitations:
- Maximum 4,000 hours of bidirectional operation
- OR maximum 10,000 kWh of energy transferred
- Once the limit is reached: V2G function permanently disabled
As Elektrowoz.pl notes: "4,000 hours at 14 hours per day (evening, night, morning) gives less than 286 days. Of course after the 4,000 h / 10,000 kWh limit the car can still be charged normally - only the bidirectional function stops working." (13)
Who does this make sense for?
- Solar panel owners (battery storage for evening use)
- Businesses with peak electricity demand during the day
- Those wanting to benefit from electricity price arbitrage
Important: this is not an unlimited feature. After 4,000 hours it stops working.

BOTTOM LINE
The VW ID.4 is an EV for pragmatists. Slower DC charging (135 kW vs Tesla's 250 kW), but €12,000-€22,000 cheaper. With an Ampere Point P11 or Q11 portable charger you charge it at home in:
| ID.4 version | Usable battery capacity | Charging time 0-100% at 11 kW |
| ID.4 Pure | 52 kWh | approx. 5-5.5 h |
| ID.4 Pro / Pro Performance / GTX | 77 kWh | approx. 7-8 h |
The ideal car for everyday use - especially if you have access to a charger at home or at work. If long motorway trips are the priority? It may be worth considering a Tesla. But for most drivers the ID.4 is the better choice: Volkswagen quality, a sensible price, and a battery built in Europe.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
Which charger should I choose for my electric vehicle?
The choice depends on your vehicle's specifications: the maximum AC charging power it supports, the number of phases (single-phase or three-phase), and the connector type (Type 2 in Europe). A single-phase vehicle will only use one phase from a three-phase charger. Before purchasing, check your car's maximum AC charging power or contact us - we are happy to help you choose the right equipment.
Can I charge an EV from a standard household socket?
Yes, but this option has limitations. Charging from a standard 230V socket provides a maximum of 16A, which equals approximately 3.7 kW. For the ID.4, a full charge from empty takes around 21-33 hours depending on the battery version. This is suitable for emergency charging or very low daily mileage.
How long does charging an electric car take?
Charging time depends on the battery capacity, charger power, and type of current (AC/DC). A car with a 77 kWh battery and an 11 kW charger will fully charge in approximately 77 ÷ 11 = 7 hours. This is an estimate that can vary based on charger efficiency, battery state of charge, and ambient temperature.
Is home charging cheaper than public charging?
Yes, home charging is generally significantly more economical. Home electricity tariffs across Europe are typically far lower per kWh than the rates at public fast-charging stations. The cost advantage is greatest when using off-peak night tariffs or surplus solar energy.
Do I need special permission to install a charger at home?
In detached houses a special permit is usually not required, but it is a good idea to consult an electrician to ensure compliance with local regulations and home safety. In apartment buildings, consent from the building manager or residents' association may be required.
Is it safe to charge in the rain?
Yes, all our chargers carry water and moisture protection certification (IP65 or IP66 depending on the model). Charging in rain, snow, or humid conditions is safe.
Can I use an extension cable to charge my EV?
This is not recommended. A standard extension cable may not handle the sustained high load of EV charging, which can cause overheating. If an extension cable must be used, it must be specifically designed for high-power applications and comply with relevant safety standards.
