The electric era of the EQS AMG 53
The EQS AMG 53 is the range-topping electric AMG, which took over the role of the classic AMG S 63 Coupe in the Mercedes range. 658 hp, 950 Nm, 3.4 s to 100 km/h - figures worthy of a 2005 Bugatti Veyron. But it's still an S-Class, that is, a car in which an employee does the driving and the customer sits in the back.
The EQS AMG 53 arrived in 2022 as the flagship of Mercedes-EQ, the brand Mercedes created specifically for EVs. The name is no accident: EQS is the S-Class in electric form, AMG is the separate division devoted to performance. 53 stands for system power (53 = around 530 kW including Boost).
Mercedes chose a separate EVA2 platform for premium EVs instead of adapting a combustion chassis (as BMW did with CLAR). That delivered the best aerodynamics in the segment: Cd 0.20, which is better than the premium segment Plaid. S-Class ride comfort, only quiet.
The showroom catch
The salesperson will present a beautiful car, but the subject of charging power is often passed over in silence. The Mercedes EQS AMG 53 4MATIC+ charges at 11 kW AC. We'll explain what that means for your wallet and how to avoid overpaying for a wallbox you don't need.
So what exactly is the Mercedes EQS AMG 53 4MATIC+?
The Mercedes EQS AMG 53 4MATIC+ is a flagship luxury AMG BEV saloon. Built on the EVA2 platform (dedicated to Mercedes-EQ), it offers a purely electric drivetrain without the compromises of a combustion engine. The car was launched in 2022.
Unlike plug-in hybrids (PHEV) and classic hybrids (HEV), the Mercedes EQS AMG 53 4MATIC+ is a fully electric car (BEV). No petrol engine, no fuel tank, no exhaust. All of its range comes from the battery, which you charge from a socket. Its most important trait follows from that category: a single overnight charge is enough for the daily commute.
PHEV (plug-in hybrid)
Small battery (10-25 kWh), petrol engine + electric motor. EV range of 30-100 km. Charges from a socket.
BEV (that's the Mercedes EQS AMG 53 4MATIC+)
Large battery (107.8 kWh net), electric motor only. WLTP range of 571 km. No emissions.
EREV (range extender)
Medium-sized battery, a small petrol engine acting as a generator (it doesn't drive the wheels directly). E.g. BMW i3 REx.
The battery that is the heart of the Mercedes EQS AMG 53 4MATIC+
The pack, 117.8 kWh gross and 107.8 kWh net, comes from China's CATL. The NCM 811 cells are optimised for energy density. The pack sits in the floor and weighs 750 kg. Liquid cooling with three separate thermal circuits.
The 10 kWh buffer (the gross-net difference) protects the cells from deep-discharge cycles. Mercedes guarantees the pack for 10 years or 250,000 kilometres, down to 70 per cent of capacity (the longest warranty in the segment). Real-world measurements of 2022-2023 EQS cars show 1-2 per cent degradation a year.
The EQS AMG 53 hasn't had an LCI facelift yet. Mercedes is planning an update for 2026 with new cell chemistry (NCM 9-series, higher density). DC in the current generation is 200 kW - less than the competing Audi e-tron GT or Porsche Taycan, but enough for the overnight cycle.
107.8 kWh net. What does that mean in practice?
With real-world energy consumption in everyday driving, 107.8 kWh net gives a range of 571 km under WLTP. That's enough for a typical week of use on a single overnight charge. DC at up to 200 kW takes care of the road-trip scenarios (10-80 per cent in 18-30 minutes).
Mercedes EQS AMG 53 4MATIC+ drivetrain capabilities
The EQS AMG 53 has two PMSM synchronous motors. 180 kW at the front, 280 kW at the rear. With Boost (Race Start), a total of 484 kW (658 hp). A two-speed gearbox at the rear saves energy on long journeys. 415 mm AMG carbon-ceramic brakes (optional).

The EQS AMG offers Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus, Slippery and Individual modes. AMG Performance Sound generates an artificial V8 engine sound through the cabin speakers and outside the car. Real-world consumption is 22-26 kWh/100 km in the combined cycle and 30+ kWh on the motorway.
Charging. Why 11 kW AC?
The Mercedes EQS AMG 53 4MATIC+ has a built-in onboard charger, or OBC (On-Board Charger), with a limit of 11 kW (three-phase, 16 A). That means that whatever the external source (wallbox, portable charger, public AC station), the car will physically cap the power at that value. Standard Type 2 (Mennekes) connector.
Mercedes deliberately went with 11 kW AC in the EQS, even though in some markets the competition (Audi e-tron GT, Porsche Taycan) has a 22 kW option. The reason: an EQS customer charges overnight from a private 11 kW wallbox in the garage and uses DC on the road. Leaving out 22 kW saves EUR 800 on the OBC.
The Mercedes EQS AMG 53 4MATIC+ accepts a maximum of 11 kW of AC power. Anything above that will be capped by the car's OBC.
Goal: full Mercedes EQS AMG 53 4MATIC+ battery (100%)
230 V household socket with the car's factory charger
Standard portable charger. Only 2.3 kW (10 A)
Three-phase CEE 16A socket + Q11/P11 charger
The full 11 kW - the maximum for the Mercedes EQS AMG 53 4MATIC+
22 kW wallbox or three-phase CEE 32A
Expensive kit, but the Mercedes EQS AMG 53 4MATIC+ will cap it at 11 kW anyway
The most common sales myth: dealers suggest that the fastest home charging is a wallbox. That's a half-truth. A wallbox is simply a charger in a wall-mounted housing. From the car's point of view there's no difference between an 11 kW wallbox and an 11 kW portable charger plugged into a CEE socket. The charging parameters are identical. For the Mercedes EQS AMG 53 4MATIC+ you'll get the fastest home charging from a portable charger or a wallbox rated at 11 kW. The portable one has an edge: you can take it to the summer house, to a hotel, to your in-laws'.
Now you know which charger you need
11 kW, Type 2, portable. No cutting into walls and no paying an electrician. Q11 with the WiFi app for PLN 1,349 or P11 for PLN 999, the same power for the Mercedes EQS AMG 53 4MATIC+.
Mercedes EQS AMG 53 4MATIC+ vs the competition
The Mercedes EQS AMG 53 4MATIC+ doesn't exist in a vacuum. The flagship luxury AMG BEV saloon segment has three natural rivals worth comparing it with on charging, range and price. Each of them has a different philosophy and different strengths.
Porsche Taycan Turbo S
11-22 kW AC, 97 kWh, 952 hp, 2.4 s. Sportier, more expensive.
Mercedes EQS AMG 53 4MATIC+
658 hp, 107.8 kWh net, 571 km range. AC 11 kW + DC up to 200 kW. Price PLN 700,000.
BMW i7 M70 xDrive
11 kW AC, 101.7 kWh, 660 hp, 3.7 s. A BMW limousine, less AMG-like.
The third important rival in the segment: Lucid Air Grand Touring. 19 kW AC, 118 kWh, 819 hp, 3.0 s. American luxury competition.
When does the Mercedes EQS AMG 53 4MATIC+ win? A specific combination of specs: battery, power, charging and price. For most customers in Poland it's still one of the best choices in the segment. When does it lose? The WLTP range of 571 km is, in some versions, shorter than the competition's. But for 90 per cent of users it's enough anyway.
Two chargers ideal for the Mercedes EQS AMG 53 4MATIC+
Both 11 kW. Both charge the Mercedes EQS AMG 53 4MATIC+ in 11 hours. Choose the version with Smart WiFi or the simpler, cheaper one.

Q11 Smart WiFi (11 kW)
App, consumption monitoring, night tariff integration. 7.5 m Type 2 cable. Full charge in 7-8 hours.

P11 with LCD (11 kW)
Solid build with no app. LCD display with charging parameters. Identical 11 kW power. Lower price.
What do the testers say about the Mercedes EQS AMG 53 4MATIC+?
The Mercedes EQS AMG 53 4MATIC+ has been tested by leading Polish and European motoring media and by independent EV market experts. The testers' consensus is clear: a solid car with specific strengths and weaknesses. Below is a summary of the main findings from industry tests by the motoring press and from EV market analyses.
According to industry tests by the motoring press, the EQS AMG 53 does 571 km WLTP, and 420-450 km in the real world in the combined cycle. S-Class comfort in electric form. That's a realistic assessment worth taking into account before you buy.
Independent road tests highlight the handling: an AMG for chief executives. An S-Class with a whip, but still an S-Class. That's an important point for people who value driving dynamics.
Industry analyses of the EV market indicate that 11 kW AC suits overnight scenarios. 200 kW DC isn't class-leading, but it's enough on the road. That matches exactly what we see at Ampere Point.
That's exactly how we see it at Ampere Point. A customer buying a Mercedes EQS AMG 53 4MATIC+ gets a car designed for overnight 11 kW charging. Our Q11 and P11 portable chargers are a perfect match: the full 11 kW, a Type 2 cable, 11 hours to a full battery. No wallbox, no electrician, no cutting into the wall.
Bottom line. Who the Mercedes EQS AMG 53 4MATIC+ is for and which charger
The Mercedes EQS AMG 53 4MATIC+ is the choice for someone who wants a flagship luxury AMG BEV saloon with a fully electric drivetrain. It's a perfect fit when: your daily commute is within the battery's range, you have access to a socket in the garage or in the car park, and you accept the need for DC on the road. Charger recommendation: if you value in-app consumption monitoring and night tariff integration, choose Q11 (PLN 1,349). If a simple, reliable charger is enough for you, go for P11 (PLN 999). Both deliver the full 11 kW, both charge the Mercedes EQS AMG 53 4MATIC+ in 11 hours, and you can take both on holiday. A 22 kW wallbox bought for a Mercedes EQS AMG 53 4MATIC+ is a classic example of a solution looking for a problem - don't let the dealership talk you into that kind of investment.
"If you don't charge every day, you're driving on reserve and losing battery range for no reason. Sort out the socket and make plugging in a routine for savings of around 80% compared with fossil fuels."
