The full 11 kW for the EV6 GT

The electric era of the EV6 GT

The EV6 GT is a sibling of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N (the same 800 V E-GMP platform, the same 77.4 kWh battery), but with a different character: fewer surprises, more brute power. 585 hp, 740 Nm and 0-100 km/h in 3.5 seconds - numbers worthy of the best supercars.

The EV6 GT arrived on the market in April 2022 as Kia's answer to the criticism that a Korean EV is nothing more than a sensible choice. Drift Mode, Launch Control, a top speed of 260 km/h - all in a car with Kia written on the bonnet. That turned perception of the brand around by 180 degrees.

Together with Hyundai, Kia bet everything on the E-GMP platform with its 800 V architecture. The EV6 GT is proof that the same platform can produce a family crossover (Standard Range 2WD) and a gamer's supercar (GT). Production scale = a low price for the technology you get.

The showroom catch

The salesperson will show you a beautiful car, but the subject of charging power often gets passed over in silence. The Kia EV6 GT charges at 11 kW AC. We'll explain what that means for your wallet and how to avoid overpaying for a wallbox you don't need.

So what exactly is the Kia EV6 GT?

The Kia EV6 GT is a BEV sports crossover. Built on the 800 V E-GMP platform (shared with the Hyundai Ioniq 5), it offers a purely electric drivetrain without the compromises of a combustion engine. The car was launched in 2022 and received its LCI facelift in 2024.

Unlike plug-in hybrids (PHEV) and classic hybrids (HEV), the Kia EV6 GT is a fully electric car (BEV). There's no petrol engine, no fuel tank, no exhaust. All of its range comes from the battery, which you charge from a socket. Its most important trait comes from that category: a single overnight charging session is enough for the daily commute.

PHEV (plug-in hybrid)

Small battery (10-25 kWh), petrol engine + electric motor. EV range of 30-100 km. Charges from a socket.

BEV (that's the Kia EV6 GT)

Large battery (77.4 kWh net), electric motor only. WLTP range of 424 km. No emissions.

EREV (range extender)

Medium-sized battery, a small petrol engine acting as a generator (it doesn't drive the wheels directly). E.g. BMW i3 REx.

The battery that is the heart of the Kia EV6 GT

The pack, 84 kWh gross and 77.4 kWh net, comes from Korea's SK On, the same supplier as for the Ioniq 5. The NCM 712 cells have a high energy density and are optimised for fast DC charging cycles. Liquid cooling with an advanced thermal algorithm.

A 6.6 kWh buffer (the gross-net difference) protects the cells. Kia guarantees the pack for 7 years or 150,000 kilometres, down to 70 per cent of capacity (less than Hyundai with the same cells!). Real-world measurements from the EV6 GT show 2-4 per cent degradation per year.

After the 2024 LCI, Kia added a heat pump as standard, improved the UI (the first generations were slow) and added a battery preconditioning function for use before DC charging. That cut winter charging time by 30 per cent.

77.4 kWh net. What does that mean in practice?

With real-world energy consumption in everyday use, 77.4 kWh net gives a range of 424 km according to WLTP. That's enough for a typical week of use on a single overnight charge. DC at up to 240 kW takes care of road-trip scenarios (10-80 per cent in 18-30 minutes).

Kia EV6 GT drivetrain capabilities

The EV6 GT has two PMSM synchronous motors. 160 kW at the front, 270 kW at the rear. Together that's 430 kW (585 hp) and 740 Nm. A single-speed gearbox with an electronically controlled rear differential (eLSD). 380 mm Brembo brakes with monobloc callipers.

The EV6 GT offers Eco, Normal, Sport and GT modes (GT is the special one - it deactivates ESP and switches on Launch Control). Drift Mode is only in the EV6 GT (the Ioniq 5 N doesn't have it). Real-world consumption of 22-28 kWh/100 km in normal mode, 35+ kWh in GT.

Charging. Why 11 kW AC?

The Kia EV6 GT has a built-in onboard charger, or OBC (On-Board Charger), with a limit of 11 kW (three-phase, 16 A). That means that whatever the external source (wallbox, portable charger, public AC station), the car will physically cap the power at that value. Standard Type 2 (Mennekes) connector.

Kia also gives it 11 kW AC, even though on DC it charges at as much as 240 kW. It's a deliberate split: AC for overnight scenarios (8 hours to a full battery), DC for road-trip scenarios (18 minutes to 80 per cent). There's no point investing in a 22 kW wallbox for a car that mostly charges from DC stations.

The Kia EV6 GT accepts a maximum of 11 kW of AC power. Anything above that will be capped by the car's OBC.

The most common sales myth: dealers suggest that the fastest home charging is a wallbox. That's a half-truth. A wallbox is simply a charger in a wall-mounted housing. From the car's point of view there's no difference between an 11 kW wallbox and an 11 kW portable charger plugged into a CEE socket. The charging parameters are identical. For the Kia EV6 GT you'll get the fastest home charging from a portable charger or a wallbox rated at 11 kW. The portable one has an edge: you can take it to the summer house, to a hotel, to your in-laws.

Now you know which charger you need

11 kW, Type 2, portable. No cutting into walls and no paying an electrician. Q11 with the WiFi app for PLN 1,349 or P11 for PLN 999, the same power for the Kia EV6 GT.

Kia EV6 GT vs the competition

The Kia EV6 GT doesn't exist in a vacuum. The BEV sports crossover segment has three natural rivals worth comparing it with on charging, range and price. Each of them has a different philosophy and different strengths.

Premium segment

11 kW AC, 79.8 kWh, 534 hp, 3.7 s. Less dynamic, but it has the public DC charger network.

Kia EV6 GT

585 hp, 77.4 kWh net, 424 km range. AC 11 kW + DC up to 240 kW. Price PLN 330,000.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 N

11 kW AC, 84 kWh (the same battery!), 650 hp, 3.4 s. More theatrical to drive.

The third important rival in the segment: BMW i4 M50. 11 kW AC, 80.7 kWh, 544 hp, 3.9 s. More saloon, less crossover.

When does the Kia EV6 GT win? A specific combination of parameters: battery, power, charging and price. For most customers in Poland it's still one of the best choices in the segment. When does it lose? The WLTP range of 424 km is, in some versions, lower than the competition's. But for 90 per cent of users it's enough anyway.

What do the testers say about the Kia EV6 GT?

The Kia EV6 GT has been tested by leading Polish and European motoring media and by independent EV market experts. The testers' consensus is clear: a solid car with specific strengths and weaknesses. Below is a summary of the main findings from industry tests by the motoring press and EV market analyses.

According to industry tests by the motoring press, the EV6 GT does 0-100 km/h in 3.5 seconds with a rotting dashboard whose quality leaves a lot to be desired. That's a realistic assessment worth taking into account before you buy.

Independent road tests highlight the handling: GT mode is a war for the first gate, drift mode is a war on tyres. That matters to people who value driving dynamics.

Industry analyses of the EV market point to 240 kW DC charging that goes from 10 to 80 per cent in 18 minutes. That's the absolute top of the segment. That matches exactly what we see at Ampere Point.

That's exactly how we see it at Ampere Point. A customer buying a Kia EV6 GT gets a car designed for overnight 11 kW charging. Our Q11 and P11 portable chargers are a perfect match: the full 11 kW, a Type 2 cable, 8 hours to a full battery. No wallbox, no electrician, no cutting into the wall.

Bottom line. Who the Kia EV6 GT is for and which charger

The Kia EV6 GT is a choice for someone who wants a BEV sports crossover with a fully electric drivetrain. It's a perfect fit when: your daily commute fits within the battery's range, you have access to a socket in the garage or car park, and you accept the need for DC on the road. Charger recommendation: if you value in-app consumption monitoring and night tariff integration, choose Q11 (PLN 1,349). If a simple, reliable charger is enough for you, go for P11 (PLN 999). Both deliver the full 11 kW, both charge the Kia EV6 GT in 8 hours, both can come with you on holiday. A 22 kW wallbox bought for a Kia EV6 GT is a classic example of a solution looking for a problem - don't let the showroom talk you into that kind of investment.

"If you don't charge every day, you're driving on reserve and losing battery range for no reason. Sort out the socket and make plugging in a routine for savings of around 80% compared with fossil fuels."

Before you buy a charger. Check your socket!

The Kia EV6 GT draws a maximum of 11 kW (single-phase/three-phase, 16 A). Whatever the power source, the car will cap the power at that value. The key question isn't "which socket do I have" but "can my charger pull the full 11 kW from the socket". See the difference:

230 V household socket + factory portable charger supplied with the Kia

Power

2.3 kW (10 A)

0-100% time

37+ hours

The standard portable charger supplied from the factory is deliberately limited to 10 A (2.3 kW) for the thermal safety of a typical socket. A full charge of the Kia EV6 GT will then take 37+ hours. A bottleneck you don't have to accept.

Three-phase CEE 16A socket + Q11/P11 charger

Power

11 kW (16 A)

0-100% time

8 hours

From a three-phase CEE 16A socket, our Q11 (or P11) portable charger draws the full 11 kW. That's the maximum power the Kia EV6 GT can accept. A full charge in 8 hours, with no wallbox, no electrician and no cutting into the wall.

22 kW wallbox or CEE 32A (three-phase)

Input power

22 kW

Actual for Kia EV6 GT

11 kW

Got a three-phase 32 A installation or a 22 kW wallbox? For the Kia EV6 GT you gain nothing over the scenario above. The car will physically cap the power at 11 kW through its built-in OBC. The same 8 hours of charging. It only makes sense if you're planning a car with 22 kW AC in the future (e.g. Porsche Taycan).

Which charger should you buy for the Kia EV6 GT?

The Kia EV6 GT has an 11 kW AC onboard charger. The Ampere Point rule: charger power = the car's onboard power. That's why we recommend our 11 kW chargers for the Kia EV6 GT. Q11 is the recommendation with an app and monitoring, P11 is the alternative.

Frequently asked technical questions about charging the Kia EV6 GT

Can I charge the Kia EV6 GT from a regular 230 V socket at home?

Yes. Any working 230 V Schuko socket rated at 16 A is enough with our Q11/P11 charger (it draws the full 16 A). A full charge from 0 to 100 per cent will take 8 hours. With the factory portable charger limited to 10 A, the time is 37+ hours. Remember: 20 per cent of household sockets have faulty wiring. Reputable chargers (like our Q11) will protect themselves and won't start charging on a damaged circuit.

Do I need a three-phase installation for the Kia EV6 GT?

Yes, for the full 11 kW. A three-phase CEE 16A installation gives the optimal power. On single-phase the Kia EV6 GT will charge more slowly (2.3 kW max).

Why doesn't a 22 kW wallbox charge the Kia EV6 GT faster?

Because the charger is physically built into the car (OBC - On-Board Charger), and in the Kia EV6 GT it has an 11 kW limit. Any external source (22 kW wallbox, 22 kW portable charger, public AC station) will be capped at that value. A 22 kW wallbox bought for a Kia EV6 GT means overpaying for power the car won't use.

Does the Kia EV6 GT have DC (fast) charging?

Yes. The Kia EV6 GT has a CCS connector and charges on DC at a maximum of 240 kW. A full 10-80 per cent charge takes 18-30 minutes at a public fast-charging station. That's the main road-trip scenario: you use DC on the road and AC at home.

Does the Kia EV6 GT battery wear out faster with frequent charging?

Not significantly. Kia deliberately uses a protective buffer (6.6 kWh - the gross-net difference) to protect the cells from deep discharge cycles. Real-world measurements from owners show 2 to 4 per cent degradation per year with daily charging. After 5 years you still have around 85 per cent of the original capacity.

What is the difference between Q11 and P11?

Both deliver 11 kW and charge the Kia EV6 GT in 8 hours. Q11 adds WiFi with a mobile app, consumption monitoring, and integration with the G12 night tariff and smart home. P11 is the simpler version with an LCD display, no app and a lower price. Charging performance is identical.

Can I use the Q11 or P11 charger with other cars?

Yes. The Type 2 connector is the European standard. Q11 and P11 will handle any car that accepts AC at up to 11 kW: BMW i4, Audi Q4 e-tron, VW ID.3/4/7, Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Mercedes EQA/EQB, Volvo EX30 and many other BEV and PHEV models.

Summary

The Kia EV6 GT is a BEV sports crossover with an 11 kW AC onboard charger. Choose Q11 (with an app and monitoring) or P11 (the budget option). No wallbox, no installation by an electrician, a fraction of the price of a fixed solution.
